Q. Why have a FAQ page?
A. We wanted a place on our new site to answer the most frequently asked questions (FAQs) we receive.
This page will be a work in progress, we'll add to it as needed.
If you have a question that isn't answered here, or you would like more information on anything at all,
please don't hesitate to email us directly at:

Q. What is an "artist bear", anyway?
A. We're glad you asked! Artist bears are a unique and wonderful way for adult collectors to stay "young at heart"!
Bear collectors know that an artist teddy bear can be a confidante, friend and cherished heirloom all in one loveable package.
Artist bears differ from manufactured lines of bears in many, many ways.
While a manufacturing company may produce a line of several thousand identical teddy bears using
automated processes, artist bears tend to be just the opposite.
Artist bears are handmade; they are often one-of-a-kind, or may come in a very small limited editions (editions of 2, 5, 10 or 25 are not unusual).
From learning basic skills to developing advanced techniques, the journey to become a bear artist is not an overnight process.
Bear artists need to develop their own patterns from scratch, this is a learning curve in itself
to translate a two-dimensional paper pattern into a three-dimensional animal!
With patterns in hand and techniques solidly learned, bear artists will also, over time, develop their own unique "look".
The "look" of a bear artist's work is what makes one artist's bears uniquely identifiable
from any other artists' bears in the world.
With time, determination, carefully utilized techniques and no small amount of effort, teddy bear artistry
becomes a form of sculpture; "soft-sculpture art" is a descriptive term often used in the industry.
While anyone might be able to make a teddy bear shape with two eyes, a nose and a mouth, it takes a teddy bear artist
to give that bear a soul, character or personality. A good teddy bear artist can make that bear come alive for you, at least a little bit!
|
Q. Why do artist bears cost more than manufactured bears?
A. This ties in very much to our answer from "what is an artist bear?" above.
A bear artist may take years to hone their craft and learn how to best utilize
advanced sculpture techniques. Many artist bears are made out of very high quality materials
including luxurious German mohairs, prices for such quality components can frequently be
$100, $200 or more than $300 for just one yard of fabric!
Time is another factor in the cost of an artist bear; some artists can take
days, weeks, and even months to finish a single bear. While many artists use sewing
machines to speed up the bear-making process a little bit (and help save strain on their wrists and fingers!),
other bear artists sew every stitch on a bear with their own hands. Even some of the most productive
bear artists might feel lucky to consistently finish one or two bears a week! Compare this
to a manufacturer's line of bears, where any number of identical bears may be cranked out in a single day with the
involvement of numerous workers and machinery.
|
Q. How do you measure your bears to determine the size?
A. A bear's height is measured from the bottom of his feet straight up to the top of his head.
The height of the ears is not included (you can imagine the difference it would make if long bunny ears were included
in the measurement!). The length of fluffy fur sticking up above the top of the head should also not be included, we try to flatten or part any fluffy stuff
when we measure to find the "actual" top of the head!
For accuracy, industry standards recommend lying the bear flat on a solid surface, then taking the measurement.
For a bear design that is on all-fours, we measure both the height of the bear (feet to top of head), but also
the bear's length (tip of nose to end of tail). The bear's size is determined by the longer measurement;
for a bear on all-fours, the longest measurement is likely to be its length.

Q. How much will it cost to ship a bear to me?
A. Shipping costs are determined by the size and weight of the package,
the shipping method, and your location. We always prefer to ship with priority mail,
and are happy to provide a shipping estimate upon request.
Better yet - how about FREE shipping? If you join our mailing list,
we will be happy to give you free shipping on your first purchase. Or are you a repeat buyer of ours? If you have ever purchased from us directly before,
whether through our web site, at a show or on eBay, we will ship a bear to you anywhere in the world for FREE!
Please don't hesitate to remind us if you are a repeat buyer, we don't always catch
that ourselves (especially if you have purchased from us at multiple venues - we can't always
link a name, to a face, to an eBay ID, to an email address!)
|
Q. What is your policy on returns?
A. Purchased bears can always* be returned to us for a full refund (less shipping costs), no questions asked.
However, the following conditions apply:
- The bear must be postmarked back to us within 7 days of the time you received it.
- The bear must be returned in the same condition that it left us.
Pack responsibly to prevent damage on the return trip (package like we did to get it to you).
We're sorry, but refunds cannot be granted if the above conditions are not met.
* Please note the following two exceptions:
- Deposits that have been made on custom bear orders are always non-refundable.
- If we made you a custom fur bear from your own fur garment, the bear is both non-returnable and non-refundable.
|
Q. Do you offer quantity discounts on your bears?
A. Starting in 2008, the answer is yes! Receive a discount when you purchase two or more soft-sculpture bears or animals
from us at the same time! This includes any purchases made
directly from us, whether it be through our web site, at shows, or on eBay. Yes, this also includes multiple-bear custom orders!
- 2 bears = 5% discount
- 3+ bears = 10% discount
Why would we offer a discount? We thought long and hard about this. There are two artists working on the
Canna Bear Paint business, and we constantly strive to keep a full selection of bears available for our busy show schedule.
As a result, we usually have at least two dozen bears available at any given time,
and dozens more in our workroom in various stages of completion. (And that doesn't include
the notebooks full of ideas for future bears that we haven't even had a chance to start yet!)
Encouraging more "multiple bear" purchases gives us more space to constantly add in new bears,
as well as a reward to our collectors. Those were both ideas that we liked, and that is why we are introducing a quantity discount!
There's always fine print, right? We do need to stress that this offer only applies
to the purchase of soft-sculpture bears and animals, such as those found in our gallery.
This offer does not include
any other items we may sell, including CafePress merchandise, artwork and jewelry.
For custom fur bears, the multiple-bear discount will be applied only to the price of the bears,
and cannot be used to reduce the fee for preparation & conditioning of the original garment.

Q. I want to adopt a bear from you but would need to make payments... is this possible?
A. We do now accept layaway payments in 2, 3 or 4-month installment plans on most of our bears, though
we prefer that the value of the bear be at least $150 if it is to be put on layaway. Multiple bears can be grouped
together on one layaway contract, with a limit of 3 bears per person allowed at any one time.
We have a layaway contract available, you are welcome to review it at any time.
If you require a more customized payment plan, we may be able to help, but we will need to discuss it with you first.
Examples might include taking a shorter payment plan on a lower valued bear (for example, we might accept two payments on a $100 bear),
or creating a longer payment plan on our most expensive bears. We cannot agree to every request,
but we will try to work to meet your individual payment needs as best as we are able.
Please note that once a layaway contract has been signed, the bear (or bears)
on the contract must remain in our possession until payment has been made in full, with no exceptions.
Again, please email us with any questions or comments at any time, we look forward to hearing from you.

Q. I love a bear on your site but it's marked "adopted", can you make me one just like it?
A. Most of our bears are shown as an edition of 1/1, this means that the bear is #1 out of an edition of only 1.
Another way to say this is that the bear is "OOAK" or one-of-a-kind. A OOAK bear is truly unique,
no other bear will be made exactly like it in the world! To protect the uniqueness of these
bears, unfortunately we cannot make exact duplicates of any previous works marked 1/1.
However, if there is something specific about the bear that you love (perhaps colors, eye features,
pattern or style) we may still be able to help! While we cannot make you a "twin"
of the original bear, we may be able to work with you to create a "cousin",
a custom and equally unique 1/1 bear who might be even more suited to your tastes!
You are always welcome to contact us with your interests, and we can discuss some options with you.
|
Q. Are your teddy bears child-safe?
A. No! Artist bears are collectible items intended for an adult market. Our bears typically
have glass eyes, as well as small metal parts in their internal jointing system. Artist bears, including
our own, also tend to have weights added in with their stuffing for a more hefty, realistic feeling than a teddy who is just stuffed with polyfill fluff.
Typical weights used include small glass beads, steel shot or copper BBs. Artist bears also can have
any number of accessories or other features that would make them unsafe for children. The professional
hangtag that comes with each of our artist bears includes a similar warning.
Never buy an artist bear as a child's toy!
|
Q. Do the bears in the gallery represent ALL the bears you've made?
A. Actually, the bears in the gallery represent only a portion of the total bears we've made.
Our goal in the gallery is to show a sampling of the many different styles, sizes and "looks" that Canna Bear Paint can create.
Sometimes bears don't make it on the gallery for a variety of reasons; it doesn't mean we don't like the bear!
The most common reason that a bear is not shown in our gallery is the simple fact that
our photography skills have their limits. When the best photo we can take of a bear still doesn't do him justice,
we don't want to insult any lovely little bears by posting inferior photographs.
After all, we wouldn't want it to happen to us, so why do it to a bear?
|
Q. If there are two artists at Canna Bear Paint, which one am I talking to?
A. While there are exceptions to the rule, usually if you contact us by email you'll be
talking to Kelly. And usually if you contact us by phone, you'll be talking
to Margaret. If you visit us at a show, we may both be around there somewhere, so just keep looking!
|
Q. Why is it called the "Bear Gallery", when there are other animals in it?
A. The simple answer is that the title "Bear and Animal Friends Gallery" just didn't fit in the menu.
We are primarily "bear artists" though, so we sometimes find the need to simplify and group all of our creations
(bears, dogs, cats, bunnies, horses and whatever else is added to the menagerie over time!)
under the general classification of "bears". It's OK though, we've checked with all the critters and nobody seems to mind!
|
Q. Why don't you have an online shopping cart for your bears?
A. We actually did consider installing a shopping cart on our newly- redesigned web site.
However, we have found that many bear collectors prefer to contact the
artists directly, which helps keep everything on a more personal level. We agree that it is hard
not to be impersonal through a web site! So yes, you will need to contact us directly
if you're interested in adopting one of our bears.
We have also found that being able to chat with our buyers helps keep our bears in an extended family of bear-collecting friends!
Of course, if you have visited our new Gifts section, you'll notice that this is the exception to that rule.
Sales of our gift items come through the online marketplace CafePress; if you place an order
in our CafePress store, you will use their shopping cart and proceed through a traditional online checkout process.
Remember to visit our Gifts page to find out more!
|
Q. What is CafePress? What happens when I order from your CafePress store?
A. We use CafePress to create print-on-demand gift and apparel items from our original art and designs.
Visit our CafePress store through our Gifts section,
or directly at http://www.cannabearpaintgifts.com.
When you shop in our CafePress store, the designs are all created by us, but CafePress deals
with the entire shopping experience and sales transaction. When you add items to the shopping cart in
our CafePress store, checkout and pay for them, this all goes entirely through CafePress, not us.
They create each item that you order when you order it (this is what makes them a print-on-demand company).
In other words, if you order a shirt in our store (a specific size with a specific design),
they create that exact shirt when they receive your order, then ship it to you directly.
When you purchase items through our CafePress store, you are not dealing with us directly;
CafePress does all of the work in processing, creating and shipping the order. If you needed
customer service or to return an item, that would go through them as well. (If your next question is
"how do you make money on that?", the answer is that they send us a commission check.)
If you are attending some of the same shows that we are, you may get the chance to see some of our
products "up close" and buy them directly from us. When we are allowed to, we will bring
a sampling of our products with us to bear shows. Not every show allows every product, however,
so if you're hoping to see something specific, contact us and make sure
we can bring it.

Q. I see you make real fur bears, where does the fur come from?
A. We only recycle vintage fur garments to make our real fur bears. Coats, stoles and even hats
can make lovely and exquisitely soft bears!
|
Q. I have an old fur coat or other fur garment, can you make a bear out of it for me?
A. Possibly! We have started a separate page for information about creating custom
heirloom bears our of real fur garments. Please note that not every old fur can be made into teddy bears, however.
Each fur will need to be judged on an individual basis to determine if it suitable for bear-making.
The fur needs to be in fairly good condition; a very dirty, discolored, dried out, insect-eaten or dampness-damaged coat
is not a good candidate to be made into a teddy bear. However, that is not to say that the
garments must be pristine! Vintage garments are almost never in 100% perfect condition; there are some condition issues for a coat that
are not a problem at all for teddy bears, and other condition problems that can be dealt with fairly easily.
It is best to ask us, and we'll help you figure out if your garment is teddy bear-worthy!
